The fellowship provides a non recoupable grant of $80,000 to $100,000 per fellow, depending on the proposed activity. Up to 10 fellows may be supported each year.

About the Screen Australia Global Fellowship
The Global Fellowships support experienced Australian screen professionals who want to take a major step forward in their international careers.
Fellows can gain direct experience with leading screen organisations and experienced professionals outside Australia. Depending on the proposed plan, activities can cover areas such as film and television development, production, financing, sales, marketing and distribution. The programme also aims to benefit Australia’s wider screen industry. Fellows are expected to return with knowledge, contacts and experience that can be shared with other Australian practitioners.
Funding Available
Up to 6 Month International Placement
A fellow can undertake one continuous international placement of up to six months. The available grant for this option is $80,000.
Up to 12 Months of International Development
Applicants can also propose several international placements, executive shadowing opportunities and other professional development activities over a period of up to 12 months. Funding for this option can reach $100,000.
Additional Accessibility and Career Support
Applicants can also request support for accessibility or caring costs where needed to participate in the fellowship. This includes:
- Up to $3,000 for career costs.
- Up to $3,000 for accessibility costs.
- Up to $5,000 combined for both.

- Applicants should already have an international profile and a strong record of professional achievement.
- Applicants should work in one or more of these areas:
- Producer
- Director
- Writer
- Screen development executive
Applicant Requirements
Applicants must meet the general Screen Australia requirements as well as the specific Global Fellowships criteria.
If Applying Through a Company
A company applicant must:
- Be an incorporated company carrying on business in Australia.
- Have its central management and control in Australia.
- Have an Australian Business Number (ABN).
- Be registered for GST if required by law.
If Applying as a Sole Trader
A sole trader must:
- Be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident holding a permanent visa.
- Have an Australian Business Number.
- Meet the other requirements in Screen Australia’s Terms of Trade.
- Applicants must also be eligible to obtain a visa for the country or countries where their proposed fellowship activities will take place.
Who Cannot Apply
You cannot apply if you are a past recipient of one of Screen Australia’s previous international placement schemes.
This includes recipients of:
- Screen Australia’s Enterprise People programme.
- Screen Australia’s Talent Escalator Internships programme.
- The Global Fellowships are also not intended for emerging practitioners. Applicants are expected to have already demonstrated professional achievement and industry impact.
Eligible Fellowship Activities
Your proposed activities must involve meaningful professional development with established screen organisations or experienced professionals based outside Australia. This includes:
- Professional placements with production companies.
- Working with studios.
- Placement with sales or distribution companies.
- Executive shadowing.
- Mentorship.
- Participation in writers’ rooms.
- Exposure to production and post production.
- International co development activities.
- International co production activities.
- Exposure to financing, sales and marketing.
- Attendance at international festivals and markets connected to the placement.
- Structured international networking.
Important Rule About Finding a Host
Screen Australia will not find or arrange the fellowship placement for you.
Applicants must identify, approach and secure their own:
- Host organisation or organisations.
- Mentor or mentors.
- Proposed fellowship activities.
- Provide evidence that the host organisation is committed to your proposed fellowship when you submit the application.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted through the Screen Australia application portal through the button provided at the end of this article. The application must contain the required information and supporting documents.
Step 1: Plan Your Career Goals
Think about where you want your career to be over the next five to ten years. Your proposed fellowship should have a clear connection to those goals.
Step 2: Find an International Host
Identify organisations or professionals outside Australia who can provide the experience, access or mentorship you need. The host should be established and recognised internationally.
Step 3: Secure the Fellowship Opportunity
You must obtain the host organisation’s commitment before submitting your application. A proposed placement without evidence of host support will not be enough.
Step 4: Prepare Your Professional Profile
Your International Professional Profile should explain your career history and professional achievements. Include relevant screen credits and evidence such as:
- Commercial performance.
- Audience reach.
- Industry recognition.
- Major festival selections.
- Awards.
- Other significant achievements.
Step 5: Prepare Your Career Development Plan
Your plan should explain:
- Your five to ten year career goals.
- Why the fellowship is important to those goals.
- What you intend to do during the fellowship.
- How the host organisation will support your development.
- How the Australian screen industry will benefit.
Step 6: Collect Host Support Letters
Each proposed host organisation and secured mentor should provide a signed support letter. The letter should confirm the organisation’s commitment and explain:
- Activities you will undertake.
- Opportunities that will be provided.
- Expected duration.
- Scope of your involvement.
- Access to relevant people, meetings or activities.
- Expected outcomes.
Step 7: Submit the Application
Upload your application and all required materials through the Screen Australia application portal before the deadline.
