After U.S. Secret Service officers extinguished the fire, the soldier was transported to a nearby hospital. As of Sunday afternoon, he remains in critical condition, as stated by a Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson.

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed that the individual involved was an active-duty airman. In a live-streamed video, the man, dressed in military fatigues, declared, “I will no longer be complicit in genocide,” before dousing himself in a clear liquid and setting himself on fire, shouting “Free Palestine,”

Authorities, including the police and security agencies, are currently investigating the incident. The war in Gaza, initiated after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in casualties and kidnappings, has prompted both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protests in the United States.
