Trends like “coastal cowgirl core” (reflecting boho LA girl fashion), “ballet core” (inspired by ballet dancers’ attire), and the “underwear as outerwear” movement (women donning men’s boxers as a fashion statement) flashed by as momentary, buzzy fashion phenomena.

For those who preferred a less trend-focused approach, the revival of “normcore,” the unpretentious everyday clothing trend from a decade ago, made a notable comeback.
Perhaps the phrase of the year should be “beautify.” Not only did we witness the somewhat concerning “Ozempic face” trend and the booming cosmetic dental industry abroad, but copper also emerged as the hair color trend of the moment.
The “box bob” haircut, inspired by Hailey Bieber, gained widespread popularity. In essence, 2023 was characterized by sensory overload, with new celebrity-inspired TikTok trends creating a continuous whirlwind of style influences. However, given the transient nature of these trends, it’s advisable not to get too attached to them – brace yourself for an entirely new set of “cores” and viral style tips in the coming year.
In anticipation of the new year, I spoke with trend forecasters, stylists, and wellness experts to gain insights into what we can expect in the fashion landscape for 2024.
Dune core
We’ve only just recovered from the explosion of hot-pink fashion triggered by the Barbie film in July. A new blockbuster might be taking control of our wardrobes in 2024 with the release of Dune: Part Two – the sci-fi epic featuring Call Me By Your Name actor Timothée Chalamet and Euphoria star Zendaya. In the film, characters don stillsuits – robust, military-style armor designed to repurpose bodily fluids like sweat into drinking water, crucial for survival in the desert.
While you may not find me donning military-grade garb on the Victoria line anytime soon, the brown and grey-toned colors and textures of the film might well influence our fashion trends. Anticipate the rise of more cool, sandy brown colors and neutrals in what I am preemptively calling Dune core. After all, who wouldn’t want to channel Zendaya’s desert-chic look after days of trekking through arid landscapes?
Hotpants
Who wears short shorts? We’ll wear short shorts! You might have witnessed the “jort” trend of 2023, where celebrities paired skater-style knee-length denim shorts with high heels and cowboy boots. However, that’s all in the past now. Micro shorts made a bold statement on the catwalks in Milan in September, notably featured in the Spring Summer 2024 Gucci collection. In Paris, hotpants graced the SS24 runways of Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Isabel Marant.
Chic Parisian
Thousands of sports fans will gather in Paris for the Olympics, and this event is expected to inspire fashionistas who will draw inspiration from their surroundings. According to Freeley from TrendBible, things will be très chic (very stylish). She notes, “With the Paris Olympics and Paralympics in 2024, there is a sense of French nostalgia in the air.” She explains that influenced by Gen Z’s fondness for all things vintage, there will be a trend towards products that evoke a flea market aesthetic – think chainstitch embroidery, scalloped edges, wooden beading. This style is anticipated to be both pretty and comforting.

Fashion experts commonly describe this bold move as “naked dressing,” a trend characterized by wearing see-through fabrics like tulle or mesh without underwear underneath. The forecast for 2024 suggests that this daring trend is here to stay as we anticipate the next risqué fashion item: the transparent skirt.
