Stanley Nwabali, the first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, has provided an update on his condition after sustaining an injury during Nigeria’s tense match against Cameroon in the round of 16.
Despite the injury, Nigeria emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, securing a spot in the quarterfinals against Angola. Ademola Lookman’s brace contributed to the team’s success.

Nwabali, speaking to journalists after the game, mentioned that he is still experiencing pain from the injury but will await the doctor’s report for a comprehensive assessment. He had to be substituted in the 80th minute by Francis Uzoho after a collision with Cameroonian player Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.
“I don’t know, but maybe the doctor would tell, but I’m still feeling pain. You know when the injury is new, you always feel pain,” Nwabali commented on his condition.
Super Eagles manager, Jose Peseiro, also provided an update on Nwabili’s injury, stating that the medical team is yet to assess the full extent of the injury.
However, he expressed confidence that the Chippa United goalkeeper will be fit to play against Angola in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.
