What are the ECOWAS Startup Awards?
The ECOWAS Startup Awards is a regional programme created to identify and support startups working on problems that matter across West Africa. The programme brings together startups, governments, investors, development partners, private sector organisations, innovation hubs and other stakeholders.
The programme is convened by the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry of the ECOWAS Commission. It is jointly implemented by the Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries and Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States.
The first edition took place in Niamey, Niger Republic, on November 18 and 19, 2021. The second edition will be hosted in Abuja and will involve 60 startups from ECOWAS member states.

Who can apply?
The competition is aimed at existing startups that have been operating for at least 2 years. You should already have a working product or service and be able to provide evidence that people are using it, that there is market demand, or that the business has room to grow. This is important because the awards are designed for businesses that have moved beyond the early idea stage.
Priority sectors for the 2026 awards
Your startup should operate in one of the programme’s 6 priority areas.
1. EdTech and skills development
This covers businesses using technology to improve education, training and access to useful skills.
2. FinTech
Startups working on financial services, payments and other technology based financial solutions can apply under this category.
3. HealthTech
This category covers technology and business solutions addressing problems in healthcare and related services.
4. AgriTech and food systems
Startups working across agriculture, food production, distribution and related services fall within this area.
5. CleanTech, climate and green innovation
This category is for businesses working on environmental, climate and green economy related problems.
6. Tourism, hospitality and TravelTech
Startups using technology or new business approaches in tourism, hospitality and travel can apply here.
ECOWAS Startup Awards eligibility requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of an ECOWAS member state.
- Operate a startup registered and based in an ECOWAS country.
- Have operated the startup for at least 2 years.
- Have a working product or service.
- Show evidence of market traction or the ability to grow the business.
- Submit all required documents.
The application is therefore intended for existing businesses with some operating history.
If your business is still only an idea, this competition is not suitable because applicants must demonstrate an operating product or service.

Applicants should prepare the following documents before starting the application:
- Completed application form
- Government issued identity document
- Passport photograph
- Business registration certificate
- Financial statements covering 2 years
- Business plan
- Pitch deck
- Pitch video
Document & Pitch Criteria
- The business plan must be no more than 10 pages, use single spacing and Times New Roman, size 12.
- The pitch deck must contain no more than 10 slides and must not exceed 5MB.
- The pitch video must not exceed 10MB.
- It is worth preparing these materials early. A weak business plan or rushed pitch can make it harder for the judges to understand what your company actually does.
How the ECOWAS Startup Awards selection process works

Phase 1: National selection
Each ECOWAS member state has an allocated number of slots.
Each member state is expected to submit 50% of its allocated slots, while the remaining 50% will come through an open advertisement to Community Citizens.
National nominations will consider factors such as:
- The startup’s level of innovation
- Growth potential
- Ability to expand
- Ability to compete in regional and international markets
Phase 2: Regional finals
A Regional Technical Evaluation Committee established by the ECOWAS Commission will assess the national nominations.
Finalists will then pitch their startups before an independent regional jury.
Winners will be selected based on scoring and consensus.
