The Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge (TIEC) aims to foster student-led innovations in clean energy, raise awareness, and encourage investments across higher education institutions in Nigeria.

In 2023, TIEC was co-created by NEF and sponsored by All On, an impact investment firm. TIEC2024 will bring together impactful energy innovations from student teams across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Shortlisted teams will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas live, either in-person or in a hybrid format, at the 9th Nigeria Energy Forum at Marcellina Centre, Along Radisson Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Nigeria. Winning teams will share prizes totaling over 3 million Naira.

Eligibility

Teams must consist of undergraduate/masters students enrolled in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics, technical colleges, and other degree-awarding institutions.

Teams may comprise students from different departments/faculties within an institution to encourage collaboration and innovation.

A faculty or institutional staff member MUST mentor student teams. Student chapters of professional institutions such as IEEE/NiMechE/NSE and others are also encouraged to participate.
Gender equity/balance in team composition is strongly encouraged and MUST be implemented across all stages of the project from ideation to delivery.

Past TIEC Winners are encouraged to serve as ambassadors, promoting the opportunity across their region and mentoring new teams rather than resubmitting previous entries.

Benefits

Winning teams will receive a share of 3.5 million Naira in USD grants to pilot or scale up their project prototypes.

First Prize – 1.5 Million Naira
Second Prize – 1.1 Million Naira
Third Prize – 0.9 Million Naira

Each shortlisted team must be represented by at least 2 students (including at least 1 female and 1 male) accompanied by 1 faculty staff member.

They will receive complimentary registration, hotel accommodation, and travel/logistics support to fully participate in NEF2024 technical sessions, training, networking, capacity-building sessions, and the Live Pitch Finals scheduled for Tuesday, 9th July 2024 in Lagos.

Application Process

Stage 1: Submit a Pitch Deck (maximum of 7 slides) outlining the idea, problem statement, innovation potential, and impact.

Stage 2: Shortlisted entries will present a Poster at NEF2023 Day 1, illustrating the concept, technical design, delivery plan, and cost/benefit analysis.

Stage 3: Finalists will submit a 90-second video pitch summarizing their innovation.
