IEG offers fellowships to PhD students, both domestic and international, in the fields of history, theology, or related disciplines with a historical focus.

Applicants must hold at least a Master’s degree and have been pursuing their doctoral studies for no more than three years by the application deadline, with exceptions possible under certain circumstances.

As a non-university research institution, IEG does not conduct examinations or grant academic degrees. Instead, fellows work on their dissertations under the supervision of their home university’s supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria

– Applicants must be international doctoral students enrolled in a full-time program.
– Dissertations must be supervised by the fellowship holder’s home university supervisor.

Benefits

1. Fellowship Rates (from 01/01/2019):

– Monthly fellowship value: €1,350
– The fellowships are solely for the research project outlined in the application at IEG, and no other employment or funding is permitted during the fellowship period.

2. Family Allowance:

– Fellowship holders whose partners accompany them to Mainz and have an income of less than €450 per month may receive a family allowance. Applicants should indicate whether their partner will join them in Mainz.

Method of Application:

Applicants must submit the following documents in PDF format:
1. Completed application form
2. Curriculum vitae and list of publications (if applicable), without photographs
3. Outline of the Ph.D. thesis (up to 15,000 characters excluding footnotes and spaces)
4. Structure of the Ph.D. thesis
5. Detailed timetable for the intended stay at IEG
6. Copies of university transcripts and proof of language proficiency
