Senate President Godswill Akpabio has laid blame on former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele for the current economic challenges facing Nigeria.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Akpabio accused Emefiele of leaving behind multiple debts and an economic mess for the present administration.

Akpabio indicated that the government is considering which allegations to prosecute Emefiele for, citing numerous misconducts during his tenure as CBN governor.
He stated, “The kind of debts and economic mess that we are in, a lot of people do not understand. President Obama said you cannot know Washington until you get to Washington, so by the time we went in to look at the economic situation of the country, it was terrible.”
The Senate President attributed the hunger in the land to the policies and actions taken during Emefiele’s tenure. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges and ensuring that Nigerians can afford three square meals a day.
Nigeria is currently grappling with a high inflation rate of 29.90%, and food inflation stands at 34.41%, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
President Muhammadu Buhari recently met with 36 governors to address economic hardships and insecurity. He announced measures, including releasing 40,000 tonnes of grain to stabilize food prices in the market.
The president also discouraged food importation, emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency to combat corruption and rent-seeking practices.
Senate President Akpabio’s remarks highlight the administration’s concerns about the economic challenges in Nigeria and its focus on addressing the impact of previous policies on the country’s current situation.
