The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is inviting applications from African researchers for the 2025-2026 Fellowship Program. This opportunity is open to researchers from East and West Africa who wish to enhance their skills in quantitative social science research (including impact evaluation).

The fellowship includes a 16-week in-person program at the University of California, Berkeley (available in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026) or at Northwestern University (Spring 2026 only). Applicants can choose from three research tracks: General Development Research, Early Childhood Development (ECD), or Youth Livelihoods.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be fluent in English (both written and spoken) and be a strong communicator.
- Come from an East or West African country and have completed secondary education in an African institution.
- Be early career scholars, defined as having completed a Master’s degree or a PhD, or be currently enrolled in a PhD program in economics, political science, statistics, public health/epidemiology, education, or a related social science field. Preference is given to those enrolled in or who have completed their PhD within the past eight years.
- Hold a current position as a staff member or student at a research institution (university or other research organization) in East or West Africa, preferably one engaged in policy-relevant, quantitative social science research.
Additional criteria for specific tracks:
- Early Childhood Development (ECD) Track: Priority for fellows from or conducting research in Tanzania, Mozambique, and Kenya. The focus is on studying programs that promote health, nutrition, security, responsive caregiving, and early learning for children aged 0-3.
- Youth Livelihoods Track: Priority for fellows from or researching in Kenya, especially in Mombasa, focusing on programs that aid youth (ages 16-24) in finding meaningful employment through education, skills training, and support services.
Application Process
To apply for the 2025-2026 CEGA Visiting Fellowship, submit the following documents through the Submittable portal by Friday, January 17, 2025, at 5 pm GMT:
- Personal Statement (1 page): Explain your motivations for applying, what you aim to achieve during the fellowship, and how you can commit to this opportunity given your current responsibilities.
- Curriculum Vitae/Resume: Include details of relevant quantitative courses completed.
- Research Proposal: Maximum of 2 pages, structured according to the provided template or using an example as a guide. The proposal should outline the project you will work on during the fellowship (changes can be made with CEGA’s approval).
- Evidence of Leave Approval or Support Letter: A letter from your supervisor or department chair confirming support and commitment to a 4-month leave if selected. Refer to the provided example.
- References: Names and contact details (email, phone number, and affiliation) of two references (e.g., supervisors, senior colleagues, professors) who can attest to your research capabilities and quantitative skills.
