The Sustainable Development-Oriented Higher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa Scholarship programme is committed to enhancing higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa to promote sustainable development throughout the region. With targeted scholarships, we aim to support individuals looking to build careers in teaching and research at higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, equipping them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and academic fields.

Eligibility Criteria

The programme is open to graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa:

  • Master’s Applicants: Those holding a bachelor’s degree.
  • Doctoral Applicants: Those with a master’s degree.

Scholarships are offered for candidates who want to pursue development-focused Master’s or PhD studies either in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another country within Sub-Saharan Africa (In-Region scholarships). We especially encourage applications from women and individuals from less privileged areas or groups.

Note: In-Country scholarships for students in South Africa are managed separately in collaboration with DAAD and NRF.

Supported Degree Programmes

The programme funds Master’s and PhD studies in specific, development-focused fields.

Scholarship Duration

Scholarships cover the standard time frame of the programmes:

  • Master’s Degrees: Up to 2 years
  • PhD Degrees: Up to 3 years

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the scholarship will receive:

  • A monthly stipend
  • Study and research allowance
  • Costs for publishing the thesis
  • Tuition fees

Additional Benefits for In-Region Scholarship Holders:

  • Travel allowance
  • Health insurance
