The motion, put forward by Senator Abdul Ningi during Wednesday’s plenary and presented by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, unequivocally denounces the assault on Ajaero as unfortunate. It underscores Ajaero’s constitutional rights as a Nigerian and Imo citizen to partake in the electoral process, deeming it wrong to subject him to brutality for engaging in political activities.
Bamidele underscores that the Senate is cognizant that the strike, initiated on November 14, 2023, is intricately tied to the alleged attack on the NLC President during electioneering in Imo State. The Senate expresses concern that many of the NLC’s demands appear not solely aimed at the welfare of Nigerian workers but rather at issues arising from the purported political involvement of the NLC President, who, as an indigene, has the right to participate in Imo State’s campaign process.
The lawmaker further emphasizes that the assault on the NLC President occurred while he was freely participating in the political campaign process of Imo as a citizen of the state. There is apprehension that allowing the strike to persist could have severe repercussions for Nigerians, potentially leading to the total collapse of the economy.
