The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation offers more than just scholarships. We help innovative doctoral students become leaders who make a difference in their communities and institutions.

Our three-year program develops leadership skills through courses taught by experienced Fellows and Mentors, taking Scholars beyond traditional university settings. Working with diverse people, Scholars learn leadership by stepping outside their comfort zones.

We provide significant financial support for doctoral research and help shape future leaders who bring fresh ideas to the Social Sciences and Humanities.

Benefits

Requirements

Are you ready to start a leadership journey in “Brave Spaces”? To apply for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

Be registered or accepted into the first or second year of a full-time doctoral program, with expected completion in 2027 or later.
Study in the humanities or human sciences with relevance to Canada’s future (refer to the FAQ for details and past recipients).
Your research must align with at least one of the Foundation’s Four Themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, or People and their Natural Environment.
Be a Canadian citizen studying at any institution or a non-Canadian (permanent resident or foreign national) enrolled in a Canadian institution.

How to Apply

Register for an account: Create an account on the Foundation’s application portal. If you have an old account (prior to 2022), you need to create a new one.
Fill out the application: Complete your application for the 2024 Scholarship Competition.

You will need to provide:

- Demographic Information: For statistical purposes only.
- Essay Questions: Answer four questions (200-400 words each).
- Doctoral Projects and Themes: Describe your doctoral project (200-400 words each).
- Referees: Provide names and emails of two referees, with at least one being an academic referee.
- Additional Information: Language skills, education, achievements, experience.
- Transcripts: Upload transcripts for all post-secondary education (except CEGEP in Quebec).
- Policies: Acknowledge that you have read and understood the Foundation’s key policies.
- Recommendations: Referees will receive an email to complete a referral form on the portal. Follow up to ensure they submit on time (by December 1, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. EST).

Selection Process

Round One: Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in February 2024 for virtual group interviews.
Round Two: Finalists will have in-person interviews with the selection committee in March 2024.
