The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of N3 billion out of the N3.5 billion raised for the 2023 election campaign by the party’s national chairman, Barr. Julius Abure.
The call for a probe comes after the National Treasurer of the LP, Mrs. Oluchi Oprah, accused Chairman Abure of misappropriating N3 billion from the campaign fund.

Oluchi was subsequently suspended for not appearing before a disciplinary committee.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Peter Obi emphasized the need for transparency in handling party finances. He stated, “For the party (LP), I am a member of the party and they have chosen to say that I am the leader.
What we need to do in the party and I have discussed it with the leadership is that we must now appoint a reputable audit firm to audit and be able to deal with the account of the party.”
Obi insisted on a thorough investigation into the allegations and counter-allegations to verify and reconcile the financial accounts of the party.
Aisha Yesufu, one of the LP presidential campaign council members, provided details of the campaign expenditures, including legal fees amounting to N744,500,000. She highlighted the importance of accountability and transparency and expressed gratitude to donors who contributed a total of N595,976,994 to the campaign.
Mrs. Yesufu outlined the allocation of funds for various campaign-related expenses, including campaign materials, media broadcasts, election promotion, polling unit agents, legal expenses, and administrative charges.
