The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for assistance in tackling crude oil theft, citing its detrimental impact on investment in the oil sector.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, made this plea during a meeting with EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, at the The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited Towers in Abuja on Monday.

According to Olufemi Soneye, the spokesperson for The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Kyari discussed the measures being implemented to eliminate corruption and address issues related to crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
Kyari emphasized the company’s determination to eradicate corruption and put an end to crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
He outlined the aggressive measures being taken to cleanse the system and safeguard the nation’s oil assets. Kyari highlighted the challenge of crude oil theft and its alignment with issues of people, assets, opportunities, and the absence of deterrence.
He mentioned the deactivation of 6,409 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region and the disconnection of 4,846 illegal pipes connected to NNPC’s pipelines. Kyari stressed the need for EFCC’s assistance in curbing economic crimes related to crude oil theft.
In addressing corruption concerns, Kyari emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to operating within a framework of high ethical standards as required by law.
He explained the introduction of systems and measures to prevent discretionary behaviors contributing to corruption, including extensive process automation.
EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, expressed satisfaction with NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to ethics and a code of conduct, challenging the management to complement these codes with effective monitoring and enforcement for enhanced deterrence.
