The Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program 2024 is designed to assist ambitious leaders in public health (Fellows) in Africa by providing them with advanced skills and competencies to plan, oversee, and guide public health initiatives that will bring positive transformations to public health in Africa.
Fellows accepted into the Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program 2024 will be seasoned public health professionals from African Union Member States. They will play a pivotal role in implementing a new public health framework for Africa, contributing to and leading efforts to develop the next generation of public health leaders.

Reflecting on the noteworthy achievements of the Kofi Annan Fellowship in the Global Health Leadership Programme, with 39 Fellows graduated from over 20 African nations and 20 more currently undergoing the program from 14 African countries, the Africa CDC observes the tangible impact of this visionary initiative.

The program’s alumni have not only refined their leadership skills but are also actively shaping the future of healthcare across the continent. With some fellows authoring books, others replicating the program in their institutions, and one even attaining the role of a government Minister, the far-reaching effects of this leadership program are undeniable.
For Cohort 4, the Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Program 2024 actively encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds across the continent. Specifically, Public Mental Health Professionals are encouraged to apply. Moreover, senior professionals working within government ministries and National Public Health Institutes (NPHI) are strongly urged to submit their applications.
What You Need to Know
The Fellowship spans 12 months and involves intensive professional development in advanced public health leadership. This includes acquiring expertise in health diplomacy, change management, policy influence, and other relevant skills. Fellows will receive support from experienced experts in the field from both Africa and the diaspora.
By the end of the program, attendees will have acquired the following skills:
- Proficient leadership styles capable of influencing and empowering others to achieve challenging multidimensional health goals.
- The ability to formulate and develop a viable strategic vision for ambitious yet achievable goals leading to positive health outcomes.
- Globally competent leadership qualities, encompassing vision, resilience, flexibility, and efficiency.
- Competence in navigating the intricate landscape of public health practice to achieve and sustain a positive impact.
- Proficiency in health politics, negotiation, partnerships, and health diplomacy.
Eligibility
Applicants for the Fellowship must:
- Be citizens of an African Union Member State.
- Possess a postgraduate degree in a relevant public health field.
- Have 10 years of professional experience in any area of public health, including but not limited to one health, human medicine, finance, health economics, health policy, animal health, or environmental health.
- Be in full-time employment in any public or private health institution in Africa.
- Demonstrate a good track record or the potential for effective public health leadership that positively impacts the health outcomes of African populations.
Selection Criteria
An independent committee consisting of experts from Africa CDC, African Union, and partners will oversee the selection process. Application documents should provide clear and detailed information about the applicant, focusing on the following criteria:
- 10 years of professional experience.
- Vision and future impact.
- Devotion to duty and readiness to champion public health initiatives in Africa.
- Ability to learn and utilize one’s talents optimally.
- Personal and professional integrity.
Cost
Africa CDC will cover all learning and development materials and meet all costs associated with the fellowship, including travel, daily allowance, and insurance during residential placements.

Application Process
Applicants should complete the application form with their personal information and professional background. The application should be accompanied by:
- A supporting letter from the current employer confirming employment, guaranteeing a position after the fellowship (for at least one year), allowing time for full participation.
- Evidence of commitment to public health in Africa through a personal statement.
- A leadership project proposal to be completed within a 12-month period.
