The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) invites applications for the 2026 Teacher Training Scholarship. This fully funded program offers international educators an opportunity to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities, fostering cross-cultural academic exchange and professional development.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship will receive:

  • Monthly Allowance: 143,000 yen, with an additional regional allowance of 2,000 or 3,000 yen for those studying in designated areas.
  • Education Fees: Exemption from entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees.
  • Travel Expenses:
  • To Japan: Economy-class airfare from the international airport nearest to the recipient’s residence to Japan.
  • From Japan: Economy-class airfare to the recipient’s home country upon completion of the program.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships 2025/2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Citizens of countries maintaining diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • Age: Born on or after April 2, 1990.
  • Academic and Professional Background: Graduates of universities or teacher training institutions with a minimum of five years of teaching experience at primary or secondary educational institutions or teacher training schools (excluding universities) in their home country as of October 1, 2025.
  • Language Proficiency: Willingness to learn Japanese and adapt to life in Japan.
  • Health: Submission of a health certificate confirming the absence of physical or mental conditions that could impede studies in Japan.

Scholarship Duration

The scholarship covers the period necessary to complete the training course at the host university, commencing in October 2025 and concluding by March 2027. Please note that extensions beyond this period are not permitted.

Application Documents

Applicants must prepare and submit the following documents:

  1. Application Form for FY2026
  2. Direct Placement Preference Application Form for FY2026
  3. Certificate of Health: Completed by a licensed doctor.
  4. Recommendation Letter: A sample format is available, but any style is acceptable.

Note: All documents should be submitted to the Japanese embassy or consulate general in the applicant’s country.
