The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is a prestigious, fully funded masterโ€™s scholarship jointly initiated by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan. Aimed at advancing Africaโ€™s development goals, JADS provides exceptional African students with the opportunity to study postgraduate programs in energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, and engineering at select universities.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The scholarship is comprehensive and includes:

Tuition Fees Full tuition covered for up to 24 months
Monthly Living Stipend 144,000 JPY (~$11,400/year)
Airfare Round-trip ticket from home country to host university and back
Health Insurance Provided through host university
Internships & Prep Study Additional 6 months after graduation
Research Grant Special allowance for thesis and academic research
Other Support Possible coverage for language or computer literacy courses

Exclusions: Family expenses, non-program language training, workshops, extracurriculars, and educational equipment like laptops are not covered.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the JADS program, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an AfDB member country
  • Be 35 years of age or younger
  • Possess a bachelorโ€™s degree (or equivalent) in a related field such as engineering, agriculture, energy, or health
  • Have excellent academic records and demonstrate potential for development-related leadership
  • Show a history of work experience (minimum 1 year) in their home country or in Africa post-bachelorโ€™s degree
  • Not be residing or working outside their home country
  • Not be enrolled in a graduate program currently
  • Not be a relative or employee of the African Development Bank
  • Commit to returning to their home country upon completion to apply their expertise in national development
