The Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program, a collaborative effort between the African Development Bank and the Global Centre on Adaptation, has initiated a call for applications for the third iteration of the YouthADAPT Challenge. This competition is designed to support young entrepreneurs who are driving innovations to address climate change.

Annually, the YouthADAPT competition calls upon young entrepreneurs who lead micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in Africa to submit novel solutions and business concepts aimed at enhancing climate change adaptation and resilience throughout the continent.

This year’s call specifically targets enterprises owned by women that are pioneering technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. These technologies encompass artificial intelligence, big data analytics, virtual reality, robotics, the internet of things, quantum computing, additive manufacturing, blockchain, and fifth-generation wireless technologies, all with the goal of fostering climate adaptation.

Benefits

The benefits for the winners of this challenge include receiving $100,000 each, mentorship and coaching to further develop their climate change adaptation solutions and business ideas, and the opportunity to become part of the YouthADAPT Alumni Network, where they can learn from a dynamic community of young entrepreneurs across Africa.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this competition, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Age: The entrepreneur must be between 18 and 35 years old.
Citizenship of the founder: The founder must be of African nationality or actively involved in the enterprise’s operations.
Geography and legal registration of the company: The business must be legally registered in Africa.
Profitability: The business must have generated profits over the last two years.
Impact/Climate adaptation: The business must demonstrate a direct impact on climate adaptation and resilience.
Gender: Only female-owned enterprises are eligible, with at least 51% of shareholding being held by females.
Industry: The enterprise must operate within the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies.
