It supports those pursuing a PhD at Heidelberg University in geography (focusing on geoinformatics) or political science, with a strong academic record.

Scholars will have the chance to engage in dynamic research within the GIScience Research Group and HeiGIT. Research areas include volunteered geographic information (VGI), big spatial data analytics, smart mobility, and humanitarian aid, including disaster management. Collaboration with HeiGIT helps translate research into practical solutions.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Robert and Christine Danziger Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be from Africa (primarily Ghana or another West or Central African country).
  • Plan to pursue a doctorate at Heidelberg University in Geography (with a focus on Geoinformatics) or Political Science.
  • Be among the top performers in your field.
  • Require financial assistance for your doctorate.
  • Plan to move to Germany for your PhD at Heidelberg University or already reside in Germany while attending a language course to acquire necessary language skills.

Note: Applying for this scholarship does not mean you have applied for a doctorate. You must also apply separately for a doctorate at Heidelberg University in one of the mentioned fields.

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend of €1,200 for up to 36 months.
  • The maximum funding period is 36 months, typically approved initially for 24 months.
  • An interim report by the doctoral candidate and supervisor is required before the end of the first funding year. Funding may be revoked if progress is insufficient. An extension of up to 12 months is possible in exceptional cases.

Method of Application

Submit the following documents during the application period:

  • Signed application form.
  • Current performance records: University diploma qualifying for a doctorate (original certificate) with final grade and official translation in German or English. If available, an official conversion of the diploma to the German grading system.
    • If the university diploma is not available by the end of the application period, submit a provisional certificate confirming your academic performance and expected completion date. The missing certificate must be submitted by the start of the lecture period.
  • Curriculum vitae in table form.
  • Letter of motivation related to the doctoral topic.
  • Recommendation letter from the potential doctoral supervisor (must be received by the end of the application period).
  • Proof of citizenship.
  • Evidence of financial situation (e.g., monthly available money, parents’ pay slips, own wage slips).

Note: Scholarship payments will only begin after submitting a valid enrollment certificate.
