Although Drake and The Weeknd have collaborated successfully in the past, an AI-generated track featuring their voices has now emerged, which neither artist was involved in creating. Surprisingly, this track, titled “Heart On My Sleeve,” has been submitted for consideration in two Grammy Awards categories.

Ghostwriter, the software responsible for composing and arranging the track, used artificial intelligence to mimic the vocal styles of the two artists with great accuracy. Despite the controversy surrounding its creation, the song has been very popular since its release earlier this year and has continued to circulate even after being removed from various platforms.
The Recording Academy CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., has stated that the track is eligible for Grammy Awards consideration. He emphasized that it was written by a human, implying that its AI-generated composition does not disqualify it. The song will be considered for Song of the Year and Best Rap Song, which both recognize the songwriting and composing aspects rather than the performance. A representative from Ghostwriter has also confirmed this information.
Universal Music Group released a statement regarding the use of artificial intelligence in music following the release of “Heart on My Sleeve” earlier this year. The song was made available on various streaming platforms, including Apple, Tidal, Deezer, and Spotify, and reportedly received over 630,000 listens. However, Universal, the current label for both Drake and The Weeknd, removed the track from all platforms mentioned above. In a statement, the label expressed concern about the emergence of “deep fakes” and questioned which “side of history” its stakeholders wanted to be on.
The statement from Universal Music Group started by acknowledging their success in utilizing new technology to benefit their artists, including their work with AI innovation.
However, they also expressed concern about the use of generative AI in creating music using their artists’ work, which would be a breach of their agreements and a violation of copyright law. They questioned which side of history stakeholders in the music industry wanted to be on and emphasized the importance of platforms taking responsibility for preventing harm to artists. Universal was encouraged by the engagement of their platform partners in addressing these issues.
