The initiative aims to develop strong, results-oriented leaders, especially since nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and around 60% of Africa’s population is under 35.
The YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is located at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, and 14 countries in East and Central Africa: Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Kenyatta University oversees the Center with support from various African and international partners.
Cohort Dates
– Cohort 57: 20-May-24 (8:00 am EAT) to 31-May-24 (5:00 pm EAT) | Program Dates: 19-Aug-24 to 30-Sep-24
– Cohort 58: 20-May-24 (8:00 am EAT) to 31-May-24 (5:00 pm EAT) | Program Dates: 23-Sep-24 to 18-Oct-24
Selected participants will undergo leadership training in three study tracks: (1) Business and Entrepreneurship, (2) Civic Leadership, and (3) Public Management. This 4-week residential program focuses on individual and team leadership skills, innovation, creative learning, and communication through interactive and experiential learning.
Requirements
The YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa competition is merit-based and open to young leaders who meet these criteria:
– Aged 18 to 35 at the time of application submission.
– Citizens and residents of one of these countries: Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.
– Not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
– Eligible to receive any necessary visa to Kenya.
– Proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English.
Selection Process
Selection panels will evaluate applications based on:
– Demonstrated leadership in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
– Active involvement in public/community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
– Ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect others’ opinions.
– Strong social and communication skills.
– Energetic and positive attitude.
– Demonstrated knowledge, interest, and experience in the chosen sector/track.
– Commitment to applying leadership skills and training to benefit your country/community after the program.
