Retired ophthalmologists Drs. Mary Calthorpe and George Wong have created a special fund to support scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying medicine.

The Calthorpe Wong Indigenous Medical Scholarship has the goal of increasing the number of Indigenous students becoming doctors and serving in Indigenous communities.
Each year, one new scholarship will be offered, depending on the available funding. Successful applicants for the scholarship will receive $20,000 per academic year for up to four years, contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress. The payments will be distributed every two weeks.
The scholarship is initially valid for four years, with a possible one-year extension in exceptional circumstances.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
– Be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
– Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be recognized as such by their community.
– Be enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program at Flinders University.
– Demonstrate financial hardship.
– Students receiving this scholarship cannot hold similar scholarships at the same time.
Selection Process
The selection process will involve the College of Medicine and Public Health, Yunggorendi Student Services, Student Finance, and Scholarships. The decision will be based on criteria such as financial need and a demonstrated commitment to work as a doctor in an Indigenous community after graduation.
