Despite comprising more than half of the college-educated workforce globally, women remain underrepresented in STEM fields, constituting only 28%. Women and girls aspiring to pursue STEM education often encounter obstacles, particularly in fields traditionally dominated by men. To address this disparity, AFS Intercultural Programs has established a dedicated initiative focused on empowering women in STEM.
Through this program, girls from diverse backgrounds worldwide are allowed to explore their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. By doing so, we aim to alter this prevailing trend and expand opportunities for female perspectives in the pursuit of a sustainable future.
Scholarship recipients will engage in a comprehensive 12-week virtual program, developed in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania, emphasizing emerging STEM skills, global competency education, and social impact. Participants will enhance their STEM knowledge through interactive coursework while honing critical global competencies such as problem-solving, analytical skills, and intercultural understanding. The program concludes with collaborative projects and presentations addressing real-world challenges, with a particular focus on climate change and the transition to sustainable energy.
