Grant Focus
The grant supports research on the following topics related to a World Heritage or tentative listed site in Africa:
- Traditional Management Systems
- Risk Management and Preparedness
- Heritage in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations
- Heritage Management and Conservation
- Heritage and Climate Change
- Heritage and Economics/Entrepreneurship
- Heritage and Sustainable Development
- Heritage Promotion and Awareness
- Heritage and Digital Technologies
- Heritage and Law
Grant Details
- Amount: Up to USD $5,000
- Duration: Research must be conducted within 9 months (May 2025 to February 2026)
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be currently or will be enrolled in 2025 in a Doctoral or Masters program (Masters 2 for Francophone countries) at an African university.
- Be conducting dissertation research in natural or cultural heritage at an African World Heritage Site.
- Be fluent in English, French, or Portuguese.
- Be citizens of an African Union Member State that is a party to the World Heritage Convention.
Application Process
Applicants must submit the following:
- Completed application form (co-signed by the supervisor)
- Letter of motivation (1 page max)
- Updated curriculum vitae (2 pages max)
- Current university transcript
- Research proposal (2 pages max), including:
- Full name, affiliated university, country, degree level, research title, and related World Heritage or tentative listed site
- Description of research (goal/objectives, research question/s, relevance, significance, justification, and scope)
- Research methodology (approach, timeframe, analysis)
- Bibliography
- Budget (including funds from all sources and justification for fieldwork items)
