The Women in the Digital Economy Fund (WiDEF) invites local entities in countries where USAID operates to submit grant applications aimed at scaling existing solutions that have made measurable progress in narrowing the gender digital divide and promoting transformative approaches to digital inclusion.

WiDEF will back entities deeply rooted in their communities, demonstrating successful strategies in advancing gender equality and/or digital inclusion for women, girls, and marginalized groups like persons with disabilities and indigenous populations.
This funding endeavor seeks to amplify proven solutions that have shown, through credible evidence, the ability to:
– Foster digital inclusion for women by providing meaningful access to and utilization of accessible digital technology, particularly smartphones and the internet.
– Substantially reduce the gender digital gap within their respective contexts.
– Demonstrate economic sustainability and scalability.
Funding
WiDEF support may include funding ranging from $500,000 to $1,500,000.
Eligibility
- Both local nonprofit and for-profit entities are eligible.
- Proposed solutions must advance digital inclusion and tackle gender-related barriers.
- Integration of at least two core priority areas and the generation of data and insights are mandatory.
- Clear articulation of scalability across diverse contexts is required.
- Adoption of gender-based violence mitigation policies for all digital inclusion activities is essential.
- Entities must meet USAID eligibility requirements.
Preference will be given to:
– Women-led organizations proposing feminist, gender-transformative solutions.
– Entities with a proven track record of supporting gender equality and inclusion of marginalized groups.
– At least 50% of award funding will support entities in sub-Saharan Africa.
USAID Eligibility Criteria
- All countries are eligible except Afghanistan, Burma, China, Cuba, Haiti, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Venezuela, and India (for Round 1 funding).
- Organizations must meet USAID Local Entity criteria.
- They must be legally organized in a USAID-assisted country, with operations and majority ownership from that country.
- They must have or be in the process of obtaining a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI).
- Familiarity with and compliance with applicable sections in the Mandatory and Required-as-Applicable Standard Provisions for Non-U.S. Non-Governmental Organizations is mandatory.
