Everton host Southampton on Saturday at Goodison Park, but the club’s owners have been warned not to attend. In a statement, the Toffees revealed that the board faces a “serious and legitimate danger to their safety and security” from supporters enraged by the club’s present circumstances. Everton also stated that the decision was made “after nasty and extremely threatening letters,” and that the board “reluctantly accepted” the advice given ahead of the game.
After becoming disillusioned with a lack of leadership from the board and some poor performances on the field, Everton fans have already called on owner Farhad Moshiri to make radical changes at the club. The Toffees finished last season only four points from the bottom and face relegation on Saturday.
“Following a comprehensive risk assessment, and in reaction to tangible threats received by the Club and intelligence we have obtained, the Club’s Board members have been instructed they must not attend today’s match,” a club statement said, quoting a security and safety expert.
Following today’s match versus Ampton, fans are set to hold a sit-in protest to express their continued dissatisfaction with the club.
