Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has attributed the recent Ibadan explosion on Tuesday night, January 16, 2024, in Oyo State, to illegal miners operating in the state.
The Governor revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion resulted from illegal miners storing explosive devices in one of the houses.

In a statement issued after touring the site and several hospitals attending to the injured, Governor Makinde acknowledged the loss of two lives and reported that 77 individuals are currently receiving treatment in both public and private hospitals.
The Governor stated that investigations are ongoing, and those found culpable for the incident will be brought to book. He expressed deep concern about the unfortunate incident, which caused death, injuries, and property damage, and assured that comprehensive search and rescue operations are underway.
The statement highlighted the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security to the scene. Medical personnel are on standby at hospitals to provide needed assistance to the injured. Governor Makinde pledged that the state government would cover the medical expenses of those injured and instructed hotels to provide accommodation for individuals displaced by the blast.
“I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government. We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives,” added Governor Makinde.
The blast occurred at about 7:44 pm in Bodija, Ibadan, resulting in casualties and property damage. The state government, through first responders and relevant agencies, is actively engaged in search and rescue operations. The Governor expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and stated that the government would support those affected by the incident.
