Zenith Bank Plc has denied reports suggesting that its Managing Director, Ebenezer Onyeagwu, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement issued by the bank, it clarified that the reports of the arrest were “entirely false.” The bank emphasized that Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu was not arrested or detained by the EFCC or any other anti-graft agency and is actively performing his duties at the bank.

The reports in question had circulated on social media and certain news outlets, alleging that the Zenith Bank MD, along with the Managing Directors of Providus Bank, Unity Bank, and Jaiz Bank, were arrested by the EFCC in connection with an ongoing investigation into financial misappropriation charges against the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, and her successor Betta Edu.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is currently under investigation for a corruption scandal, leading to the suspension of its Minister, Betta Edu, and the CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu. The ministry’s former head, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, is also facing an EFCC investigation related to an alleged laundering of N37 billion during her tenure.
