This scholarship supports both undergraduate and postgraduate (master’s) studies in selected fields, with an emphasis on inclusion, especially for young women, persons with disabilities, and displaced or refugee youth.

Selected Mastercard Foundation Scholars at UWC will receive comprehensive financial and personal support, including:

Eligibility Criteria

For Undergraduate Applicants

  • Must be 26 years old or younger by January 2026
  • Must meet UWC’s minimum admission requirements
  • Must have applied and obtained a UWC application number
  • International applicants must apply for exemption via Universities South Africa (USAf)
  • Must provide evidence of financial and/or social barriers

For Master’s Degree Applicants

  • Must be 30 years old or younger by January 2026
  • Must meet the program-specific admission requirements at UWC
  • Must provide SAQA verification for foreign qualifications (Visit SAQA)
  • Must apply for admission to UWC and obtain a UWC application number
  • Must demonstrate need and leadership potential

Selection Emphasis

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program prioritizes:

  • Women and girls
  • Refugees and forcibly displaced individuals
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Economically disadvantaged communities

How to Apply

Step 1: Apply for Admission to UWC

  • Visit the link below
  • Navigate to “Apply” under Admissions & Financial Aid
  • Submit your academic application before the UWC deadline
  • You will receive a UWC Application Number—you’ll need this for your scholarship application

Step 2: Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

  • Once you have your UWC application number, proceed to fill out the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application form online
  • Provide accurate personal information, academic details, and a statement of purpose
  • Highlight your leadership experiences, community service, and how your background aligns with the goals of the program
