This programme is unique in the Netherlands, with six faculties contributing equally to the educational content. It offers students the chance to participate in a field study in the Global South, develop interventions for societal problems in collaboration with NGOs, government agencies, firms, or schools, and write an interdisciplinary bachelor’s thesis.

UM Global Studies Scholarship

The UM Global Studies Scholarship offers full coverage (including a tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend) per academic year for top-performing bachelor students from the Global South who demonstrate strong personal development potential and have been (conditionally) admitted to the Global Studies study programme.

Benefits

  • Living expenses: €15,925 per academic year (paid to students)
  • Health & liability insurance: Paid by the institution
  • Visa application costs: Paid by the institution
  • Tuition fees: Paid by the institution
  • Pre-Academic Training costs: Paid by the institution

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the UM Global Studies Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Hold the nationality of a country in the Global South (defined as countries in Africa, Asia including the Middle-East, Latin America, and the Caribbean, based on the OECD definition).
  • Meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands. If already holding a residence permit for another Schengen country, it must be valid until at least 2 September 2025.
  • Not hold dual nationality from a country in the Global North.
  • Have never participated in a degree-seeking higher education programme in the Netherlands (those who have completed exchange programmes are still eligible).
  • Be no older than 35 years on 1 September 2025.
  • Agree to serve as an active Global Studies and UM ambassador during and after their studies by sharing their experiences during at least one information session for students or other stakeholders.
  • Have applied for admission to the Global Studies study programme for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Method of Application

Step 1:
Register for one of the participating bachelor’s programmes at Maastricht University (UM). For more details, check your prospective programme’s webpage. Once you submit your application through Studielink, you will receive a UM student ID number, which is required to complete the scholarship application form.

Step 2:
Complete the scholarship application form using your UM account. The application form is accessible via the link provided on the university’s official scholarship webpage. Applications are only accepted through this form.
