The monarch had been abducted about a month ago. Just a few days before his death, a video surfaced showing him pleading with the Sokoto State Government, the Sokoto Sultanate Council, as well as his family and friends, to raise the ransom money needed to secure his release before the deadline set by his kidnappers.
In the video, Alhaji Bawa mentioned that the bandits had given a strict deadline for the ransom payment, warning that if the money was not paid on time, they would kill him.
The traditional ruler, who appeared in the video with bloodstains on his clothes and his hands and feet bound in chains, made a heartfelt appeal, saying, “I am asking for the government’s help. I have served them for 74 years, including 45 years in government service. I have always been loyal to the government, and it is their responsibility to assist me.”
