Scholarship Details

The Equity and Merit Scholarships are designed for academically excellent students who have the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable development in their home countries. The University of Manchester, renowned for its outstanding facilities and broad course offerings, is globally respected as a center of teaching excellence.

This scholarship is available to students from 20 developing countries across Africa, Asia, and South America. It is open to all self-sponsored EU/international applicants with an offer to study one of the Global Development Institute (GDI) master’s courses.

Requirements

To be considered for the University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Hold an Offer: Have an offer to study at the University of Manchester.
  • Academic Qualifications: Meet the requirements to obtain a postgraduate degree from the University.
  • Residency and Citizenship: Be a resident and citizen of Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zimbabwe, and have not previously studied outside of Africa (training of six months or less does not count).
  • Professional Experience: Have at least two years of professional experience related to the chosen field of study (unpaid internships or voluntary work are not included).
  • Educational Background: Hold a bachelor’s degree with an overall excellent grade, typically placing in the top 10% of the class (must have graduated before September 2023).
  • Commitment to Home Country: Be committed to returning home and demonstrate potential to make a positive impact on the future of the home country.
  • Career Goals: Have a clear understanding of how studying at Manchester will benefit their career and the wider community.

Duration and Reward

The University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarship covers:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • For students studying in Manchester: return international airfares, living expenses, and visa costs.
