As the youth population in Nigeria grows, Civic Tech has emerged as a powerful tool for positive societal change. By leveraging digital innovation, Civic Tech bridges the gap between government and citizens, expanding civic engagement and addressing crucial issues like public participation, transparency, climate resilience, justice reforms, accountability, and efficient public service delivery.
The Civic Tech Fellowship aims to cultivate new leaders in the civic-tech space through an incubation program focused on key areas such as Civic Participation & Engagement, Transparency & Accountability, Institutional Efficiency, Justice Reforms, and Climate Resilience.
Twice a year, the program incubates civic-tech solutions that advance these themes. The fellowship is open to ideas at all stages, whether local or hyperlocal, and welcomes diverse uses of technology, including radio, text, print, IoT, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or social media. The focus is on the impact these ideas will have on people and civic spaces, the sustainability of the solutions, and the participants’ determination to drive change.
Thematic Areas
- Artificial Intelligence for Good: The fellowship supports projects that use AI to address challenges and improve governance within the AI ecosystem.
- Low-Cost Climate Tech Solutions and Advocacy Movements: The fellowship seeks tech-driven solutions to climate-related challenges, particularly those affecting agriculture, the environment, and community resilience. Targeted grants will be provided to support the development of affordable and innovative ideas.
- Technology for Social Good (Health, Education, and Justice): The fellowship aims to nurture the next generation of civic-tech leaders who can develop tools to tackle Nigeria’s challenges in health, education, and justice, following the examples set by organizations like BudgIT, Connected Development, Gavel, and GenderMobile.
Eligibility
- Open to early-stage civic innovators with tech-enabled ideas that can solve social problems.
- Applicants must be based in Nigeria.
- Projects should focus on Civic Participation & Engagement, Transparency & Accountability, Institutional Efficiency, Justice Reforms, and Climate Resilience.
Benefits
- The fellowship will incubate 12 new and innovative solutions in the civic space.
- Fellows will receive technical and legal support to prepare their solutions for launch.
- Participants will receive a monthly stipend of N150,000 and a workspace for the duration of the fellowship.
