Applications are Now Open for the Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program 2025/2026
The Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) and Kyoto University (KU) started the Canon Foundation-Kyoto Japan-Africa Exchange Program in 2018.

This program provides fellowships for top researchers in African Studies. It supports KU fellows wanting to research in Africa and scholars from KU’s partner institutions in Africa wishing to research in Kyoto. Fellowships last from six weeks to one year, between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
Eligibility
Applicants must have at least a Master’s degree and be employed at KU or its partner institutions as post-doctoral fellows or faculty members when applying.
Stipend and Travel Expenses
Successful applicants will receive financial support ranging from 22,500 to 27,500 Euros per year, adjusted for different periods. CFE will handle payments and inform applicants about the payment process.
Application Procedure
Applications are due by October 15, 2024. First, KU reviews the applications, then CFE. The CFE Selection Committee will make final decisions and notify applicants by the end of March. The earliest fellowship start date is April 1 of the same year. Submit the following documents to Kyoto Uni Africa Unit (canon_caas@jambo.africa.kyoto-u.ac.jp):
- Research plan with a clear title, start/end dates, and cost estimates (maximum 2 pages)
- Two reference letters (maximum 1 page each) – one commenting on your academic and professional qualifications and the other from your prospective host
- Curriculum Vitae
- Copy of your doctoral certificate or highest academic degree
- Passport-sized photograph
- List of your academic publications or professional achievements, including all authors, place and year of publication, and page references
