The project, titled “South-North flows of information through translation in the global news agency AFP,” is led by Dr. Marlie van Rooyen from the University of the Free State (UFS) and Prof. Lucile Davier from the University of Geneva. The UFS postdoctoral fellow will be based in Bloemfontein under the supervision of Dr. Van Rooyen.

This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity for a doctoral graduate to gain research and innovation experience at a higher education institution, working under the guidance of experienced researchers. It is awarded competitively, based on academic achievements, research potential, and relevant experience. The fellowship lasts for two years (2025–2026).

Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have completed a PhD in a relevant field within the last five years. Relevant fields include but are not limited to translation studies, news translation, news/media and language, ethnography, digital humanities, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics.
  • Must be fluent in English and French.
  • Cannot hold full-time employment during the fellowship.
  • Must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship (residential fellowship, 80% of time spent at UFS).
  • Must have strong socio-political knowledge of Africa.

Recommendations

  • Experience with qualitative research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of qualitative data analysis software.
  • Experience presenting research at conferences or seminars.
  • Previous experience in authoring or co-authoring academic publications.

Selection Process

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative research as part of the team.
  • Travel to gather data from two news agency offices in Africa and the AFP’s African desk in Paris.
  • Prepare and present papers at international conferences.
  • Publish at least one research article or book chapter per year in a DHET-accredited scholarly journal or book. The fellowship may be renewed based on satisfactory performance and an annual progress report.
  • Register as a postdoctoral research fellow at UFS and participate in the activities of the Department of Linguistics and Language Practice.

  • Motivation letter (1-2 pages) outlining relevant experience.
  • Full CV with a list of research publications, conference papers, and other scholarly outputs.
  • Complete transcripts of academic records and a copy of the doctoral degree certificate.
  • Copy of ID or passport (for foreign applicants).
  • Contact details of two academic referees, one of whom must be your lead PhD supervisor.
