The residency program targets creative writers encompassing novelists, short story writers, playwrights, poets, and scriptwriters affiliated with Africa and the African diaspora, offering them an opportunity to participate in a residency program in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with a grant totaling 45,000 AED.
This initiative is established in tribute to the late Nigerian Professor Tejumola Olaniyan and his significant intellectual contributions in the realm of African literature and critical theory.

- As outlined by the program organizers, the residency entails recipients traveling to Sharjah, UAE, for three months to complete their respective projects.
- The cohort typically commences in the fall season each year.
Proposed projects can be crafted in either Arabic or English (with consideration given to other languages). - Recipients will have the opportunity to publish their written works through The Africa Institute’s publications program.
- Furthermore, projects focusing on theater and film scripts may be evaluated for publication or assisted in facilitating their production.
- These projects, whether freshly conceptualized or works-in-progress, must be realistically achievable within the duration of the residency.
- All applications will undergo an assessment by The Africa Institute’s panel of peers, comprising esteemed writers.
- Based on the quality and feasibility of the proposals within the residency period, three recipients will be chosen.
Application Procedure:
To apply for the program, applicants must submit:
- A CV/résumé.
- A two-page narrative outlining the proposed project to be pursued during the residency period, its significance, and a projected completion date.
- A sample of published or unpublished writings.
- All required application materials—CV/résumé, a two-page narrative, and a writing sample—must be compiled and attached separately into a single PDF document, adhering to the specified order.
Applicants should name the file using the residency title abbreviation followed by the applicant’s name, in the format: TOCWRP_LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME.
Additionally, the email subject heading should correspond to the file name, and the PDF should be sent as an email attachment.
The application deadline is set for Saturday, June 1, 2024.
