Sam Smith, an English singer-songwriter, has released his fourth studio album, “Gloria,” on Capitol Records. It is Smith’s first studio album since Love Goes Round (2020). It was preceded by the songs “Love Me More” and “Unholy,” the latter of which was a duet with German vocalist Kim Petras. “Unholy” was pushed as the lead single, and it reached the top of the charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, becoming Smith and Petras’ first chart-topper in the latter country.

Sam Smith worked with frequent collaborators Jimmy Napes, Stargate, and Ilya Salmanzadeh on the album, which was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Jamaica, with more contributions expected from Los Hendrix, Max Martin, and Calvin Harris.

Smith remarked that the album “felt like a coming of age” for them and helped them “get through some tough moments,” and he hoped that it might also serve as a “beacon” for listeners. A press statement dubbed it a “personal transformation” for Smith, including the “dazzling, rich, sophisticated, surprising and at times exciting, edgy sound of Sam’s creative heart today”, as well as lyrics about “sex, lying, love, self-expression, and imperfection”.
