The military regimes in Mali, Niger Republic, and Burkina Faso have jointly announced their immediate withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in protest of their suspension from the regional bloc.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the leaders of the three West African countries declared it as their “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States without delay.

These countries, grappling with challenges such as jihadist violence and poverty, have had strained relations with the Economic Community of West African States since coups occurred in Niger on July 26, 2023, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Mali in 2020. Following their respective coups, all three nations faced suspension from the Economic Community of West African States, with Niger and Mali subjected to heavy sanctions.
