The Leverhulme Trust has partnered with Keele University to launch the SURF (Social Upward Resilience and Fellowship) Scholarship, a fully financed opportunity designed for postgraduate students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. Covering the entire Master’s plus PhD journey (2025–2030), this award includes comprehensive funding and substantial research support.

Scholarship Benefits

  •  Full Tuition Fees
    • 1-year Master’s + 4-year PhD (PGR) fully covered
  •  Living Stipend
    • Funded at standard UKRI doctoral rates, over five years
  •  £10,000 Research Grant
    • For expenses like fieldwork, training, equipment, or travel
  •  Cohort-Building Support

Who Can Apply?

Academic and Personal Criteria

  •  Completed or expecting at least a 2:1 honours degree
  •  Must belong to one of the following backgrounds:
  • Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed White & Black Caribbean, Mixed White & Black African, or similar ethnically mixed heritages — OR
  • Have received a full undergraduate maintenance loan or Special Support Loan

Discipline: Open to candidates from any postgraduate research discipline.

  •  The completed SURF Masters-plus application form
  •  Updated CV
  •  Official transcripts and degree certificates
  •  Passport copy
  •  English language certificate (if applicable)
  •  Details for two academic referees

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I apply if I’ve earned a Master’s already?
No. This is designed for “Masters plus” paths only, not standalone PhD routes.

Can I design my own PhD topic?
Yes, your own project is welcome. Contact surf@keele.ac.uk for discussions, or join a specified call.

Is prior PhD supervision required?
Not at application time, but you’ll need to collaborate with a Keele supervisor once awarded.

What if I’m not Black British?
If you received full home undergraduate maintenance loans, you’re still eligible regardless of heritage.
