The 2025 Johns Hopkins Healthcare Design Competition is now accepting applications! This global competition invites student-led teams from all academic fields who have developed innovative health-related solutions. Open to participants from all countries, it celebrates excellence in health Care design.

Awards and Prizes

Prizes are awarded for each track as follows:

  • 1st Prize: $5,000
  • 2nd Prize: $3,000
  • 3rd Prize: $1,000

Eligibility Criteria

To participate, projects must meet the following requirements:

  • Healthcare Focus: Projects must address one of the following four tracks:
    • Designs of Solutions for Advanced Health Systems
    • Global Health/ Humanitarian Design
    • Healthcare Apps/ Digital Health
    • Post-Surgical Infection Management
  • Project Start Date: Projects must have begun after January 1, 2023.
  • Student-Led Teams: Projects must be driven by full-time students. Eligible participants include undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and professional degree students (e.g., MBA, MD).
  • Team Size: Teams must consist of more than one full-time student.

Ineligible Entries

    • Postdoc research projects.
    • Projects funded with more than $100,000.
    • Projects run by faculty members or startup companies.

NOTE: Applicants can submit multiple unique projects for consideration.

Competition

Participants can submit entries under the following categories:

  1. Designs of Solutions for Advanced Health Systems
  2. Global Health/ Humanitarian Design
  3. Healthcare Apps/ Digital Health
  4. Post-Surgical Infection Management

Brief Requirements

Participants must submit a two-page executive summary that outlines their design project. The brief should target medtech engineers and designers and must include the following sections:

  1. Problem Description (25%)
    • Define the healthcare issue being addressed.
    • Provide clinical background and explain the need for a better solution.
  2. Solution Concept(s) (25%)
    • Describe the proposed solution.
    • Highlight the design rationale and how it addresses stakeholders’ needs.
  3. Reduction to Practice (25%)
    • Present proof-of-concept data, experimental results, and/or prototype renderings or photos.
  4. Pathway to Implementation (25%)
    • Outline the steps required to develop the solution into a real-world impact.

Competition Timeline

  • January 19, 2025: Deadline for proposal submissions.
  • March 10, 2025: Finalists announced.
  • April 12, 2025: Final round (held virtually).
