The unfortunate incident took place around 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 21 when unidentified hoodlums targeted policemen from Operation Sting of the Rivers State Police Command.

The officers were conducting a stop and search at Eliozu flyover when they were attacked by hoodlums traveling in a carton-colored, glass-tinted Sienna bus.

The spokesperson mentioned that the vehicle’s registration number is unknown at this time. The criminals fired directly at the unsuspecting officers without any provocation.

The attackers, arriving from the Rumuodumaya axis, opened fire on the police team, leading to the tragic loss of one Inspector who bravely sacrificed his life in the line of duty.

Despite the loss, the police team responded courageously, engaging the attackers and neutralizing one who was wearing a mask. Unfortunately, the others managed to escape, potentially sustaining gunshot wounds.

The police spokesperson assured citizens that they can continue their lawful activities without fear, emphasizing that the command will enhance its strategies to ensure their protection.

An investigation has been initiated to apprehend the culprits, and the criminal gang responsible for the attacks has already been identified. The police force is committed to bringing all individuals involved in this despicable act to justice.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olatunji Disu, pledged that those perpetrating violence against law enforcement and civilians will face the full weight of the law. The police extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen Inspector, vowing that his sacrifice would not be in vain.
