Eligibility for Explorers Club Discovery Grants
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. The program supports researchers and explorers globally, allowing them to showcase their discoveries without limitations on scientific publication or research ownership.

Supported Areas in Explorers Club Discovery Grants
Fieldwork in various disciplines, including biological sciences, archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, earth sciences, ecology, astronomy, and exploratory projects shedding light on our world and its changing regions.
Application Process
- Begin with a pre-application submission.
- If approved, you’ll be invited to submit a full application via the online portal (by invitation only).
Application Review
Applications are assessed on a rolling basis throughout the year. Apply at least six months ahead of your fieldwork.
Grant Amount
Grants typically range from $25,000 to $40,000.
Media Component
Grant recipients must offer Discovery the first right to cover their expedition, with access to Discovery’s global audience through digital and television programming. The aim is to create engaging, educational, and inspiring content.
Additional Grants
The Explorers Club supports the next generation of explorers through the Exploration Fund and Youth Activity Fund. Other explorers receive backing through Rolex, OceanX, and Fjallraven grants.
Expedition Types
Supported projects primarily involve field expeditions in various scientific fields. While the work may include lab components, it should be primarily field-based. Projects centered solely on extreme sports or physical feats won’t be considered.

You can expect a response within 30-45 days as pre-applications are reviewed monthly.
Full Application Requirements for Explorers Club Discovery Grants
- Project title and summary.
- Expedition dates.
- Project description, including hypothesis and methodology (1-2 pages).
- Detailed project budget.
- CVs of the applicant and team members.
- Inclusion of a local collaborator.
- A three-minute video statement by the grantee.
- Two recommendation letters.
- Relevant affiliations.
- Required permits for the project.
- Applicant’s social media and website details.
- Maps and visual documentation of the project site.
Application Timeline for Explorers Club Discovery Grants
Applications are received on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly. It’s recommended to submit your application at least six to nine months before planned fieldwork.
Application Evaluation
Applications are assessed by a committee of Ph.D. researchers from diverse scientific fields, the Vice President of Research and Education, and Explorers Club executives. Additional specialists may review the applications. Discovery Inc. will also review EC-recommended projects to determine their potential for web and television coverage.
Application Criteria
Projects are assessed based on their alignment with The Explorers Club’s mission and ethics, scientific credibility, innovative approaches, impact potential, team qualifications, and their ability to educate and inspire a global audience through storytelling.
