Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has promised to transform Umuahia, the state capital, from “a glorified village” into a proper city within the next year.
During an interdenominational thanksgiving service marking his one year in office, Otti announced plans to start a multi-billion Naira bus terminal project on Tuesday, May 28.

This project aims to consolidate all motor parks and the railway terminal in one location, giving Umuahia a significant facelift.
“We want Umuahia to be a proper capital city. We want all the parks and markets in one place, including the railway terminal. The railway from Aba will soon reach Umuahia, and we have agreed to move the Umuahia Central Terminal to the same location. In the next year, you might not recognize Umuahia if you visit,” Governor Otti said.
He assured that his administration would continue doing the right things, regardless of criticism, and asked citizens to pray for his government. Otti emphasized his commitment to transforming Abia for the better and stated that he is only accountable to God and the people of Abia.
The Governor also promised there would be no division in Abia under his leadership, treating all residents equally, whether they are indigenes or not. “In my administration, there will be no division. We are all one. We don’t care where in Abia or Igboland you come from. If you live here, you are part of us. That’s why we have a Permanent Secretary from Edo State, not the South East,” Otti stated.
He thanked God for the chance to serve the state and the support of Abians, vowing not to disappoint them. Instead of celebrating the anniversary with festivities, his administration marked it by commissioning significant projects.
Reverend Dr. Uma Onwunta of the Presbyterian Church, in his sermon titled “Pay Back Time to God,” said God expects thanksgiving from His people and praised the Governor for fulfilling his vow to God. He stressed that Christians should thank God and acknowledge His grace, noting the many accomplishments in the state under Governor Otti.
The Thanksgiving Service was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, House of Assembly Speaker Mr. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Austin Nmeregini, Chief Judge Honourable Justice Lilian Abai, and others.
