Cross River State Governor, Bassey Edet Otu, has expressed dismay over the rampant vandalism of electricity infrastructure in the state and called on the populace to assume responsibility for safeguarding these assets within their communities.
The governor voiced his concerns after a tour assessing electrification efforts in the northern senatorial district of the state.

He remarked, “The level of vandalism we’ve witnessed is deeply troubling and, frankly, extremely disheartening. The extent of the damage is alarming, leaving virtually nothing unscathed.
The repercussions are significant, not only in terms of repair costs but also in rebuilding trust and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our electricity infrastructure for future generations.”
The tour aimed to evaluate the status of electrification initiatives across the northern senatorial zone.
While engaging with traditional leaders, elders, and youths, Governor Otu emphasized the crucial role they play in protecting vital infrastructure in the state.
Highlighting the extensive damage incurred, he stated, “While we cannot reverse what has happened, together, we can halt this destructive pattern by collectively taking ownership of government infrastructure.”
Otu stressed the importance of collective action, urging “our elders, youth, traditional rulers, and every member of our community to step up and take charge of safeguarding our electricity infrastructure for the benefit of all.
Let us come together to protect these essential assets, recognizing that our combined efforts today will shape the prosperity and well-being of future generations.”
The assessment exercise covered Obanlikwu, Obudu, Bekwarra, Ogoja, and Yala local government areas in the northern senatorial zone of the state.
