Dr. Sofia Nivarti is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow and College Lecturer at St John’s College. Biography
A native of Jyväskylä, Finland, Dr. Sofia Nivarti began her career as an architect, practicing in Boston, MA, with a focus on educational and industrial buildings. She returned to academia to pursue her doctoral research, which focused on architectural history.
Her research explores the complex “afterlives” of significant modern buildings, and the theoretical and political implications of architecture in challenging contexts. This is evident in her two main ongoing projects: one tracking the post-construction histories of Aalto buildings, and the other examining contested notions of contemporaneity in Sámi public buildings in the Nordic region. Dr. Nivarti’s monograph, The Religious Architecture of Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto (2023), establishes her as a leading voice in Aalto scholarship. Her commitment to disseminating this research is highlighted by her active involvement in curating and film production.
