The DAAD STEM scholarship program aims to support the education and employability of young academics and future professionals from developing and emerging countries.

Benefits
- Monthly stipend: 934 euros.
- Insurance: Coverage for health, accident, and personal liability.
- Travel allowance.
- Annual study allowance: 460 euros.
- Additional benefits may include:
- Rent subsidy.
- Allowance for accompanying family members.
- Support for additional costs due to disability or chronic illness.
- Reimbursement for carbon offset payments for air travel.
- Language improvement benefits, including course fees for online language courses, German language courses in Germany, allowance for a chosen German language course, and reimbursement of TestDaF or DSH test fees.

Requirements
- High-achieving students from developing and emerging countries who have completed their studies with a first degree recognized in Germany (e.g., Bachelor’s degree) by the application deadline.
- Individuals with a Master’s degree are not eligible to apply.
Selection Process
- Academic qualification: Consideration of academic achievements, course of studies, language skills, and relevant work experience or internships.
- Quality of the study project: Assessment of the study project’s quality, preparation, and alignment with the applicant’s academic career.
- Applicant potential: Evaluation of motivation, prospects for further academic, professional, and personal development, and extracurricular involvement.
- Equal opportunity considerations: Factors such as disability, chronic illness, caregiving responsibilities, refugee background, or extensive employment needed to finance studies.
- Interview: A personal (digital) interview with an independent selection committee of university teachers.
Application Documents
- Online application form.
- Full CV in tabular form (max. 3 pages).
- Letter of motivation: 1-3 pages explaining the academic and personal reasons for choosing the study project in Germany.
- Letter of admission to the study program at a German university (if not available at the time of application, it must be submitted before the funding period begins).
- Form “Information about your preferred Master’s programs,” completed with up to 5 choices (note that Master’s programs with tuition fees are excluded).
- Current transcript of records with individual grades.
- University degree certificates (with final grades and transcripts for all academic years).
- Language certificate (at least B1, no older than 2 years).
- Letter of recommendation from a university teacher (using the DAAD form).
- Passport/national identity card (and if applicable, other documents about your identity or current residence status).
- Other relevant documents (e.g., employment certificates, proof of extracurricular engagement).
- Translation of documents: If submitted in a national language, provide German or English translations.
Application Process
- Applications are submitted online through the DAAD portal.
- The portal is only accessible during the application period. Once the deadline has passed, the portal will be closed until the next application period.
Method of Application
To apply, follow these steps:
Register in the DAAD Portal:
Create an account on the DAAD portal. Be sure to read the notes about the registration process.
Request a Recommendation Form:
During the application period, generate the recommendation form in the DAAD portal as a writable PDF under the section ‘Request recommendation form.’ Send this form to your university teacher and ask them to fill it out completely. Once you receive the completed form, upload it to the portal under ‘Letter of Recommendation.’
Apply Online in the DAAD Portal:

- Prepare your application documents: Translate documents if necessary (unless they are already in German or English).
- Scan and save documents: Convert all paper documents to PDF format. Only PDF files can be uploaded to the portal.
- Fill out the application form: Upload your application documents, including any translations, in PDF format to the portal. Make sure translations are uploaded together with the original language document.
- Submit your application: Complete the process by submitting the application online.
Important Notes
- Your application will only be considered if all required documents are submitted through the DAAD portal by the application deadline.
- The DAAD portal will close at 24:00 (CET or CEST) on the last application day. It is advisable to submit your application before the final date to avoid potential technical issues.
- Incomplete applications cannot be considered, and it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all parts of the application are complete.
- All application documents will remain with the DAAD. Applicant data is stored in accordance with the Federal Data Protection Act and the EU Data Protection Regulation for the purpose of processing the application.
