Chaos and confusion erupted on Friday at the Nigeria Customs Services Office in Yaba when the government’s intended gesture of distributing palliative 25kg bags of rice turned into a chaotic scene, leaving many citizens frustrated and struggling.
The Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, had announced that the process for the sale of the food items had been streamlined.

Applicants were required to submit a form with all details, including the National Identification Number (NIN), and a bar code would be generated for collecting the commodity. However, the eagerness to avoid exclusion resulted in people losing their belongings.
A disgruntled individual who spoke to Vanguard expressed regret, stating, “I regret coming here today. I arrived at 6 am, but I’m yet to buy the promised rice. Is this the government’s idea of help? I came here with shoes and a wristwatch, but everything was gone, and I didn’t even get the rice to buy. This is just suffering for nothing; in my life, I won’t do it again.”
This sentiment was echoed by another hopeful buyer, Abdulramon, a student, who arrived at 10 am and, as of 2:25 pm, had not been able to secure a bag of rice.
“The queue was moving until people scattered it. If Nigerians had followed the instructions to stay in line, we wouldn’t be experiencing this,” remarked Abdulramon.
“If you are not strong, you cannot come here. It’s survival of the fittest,” emphasized Abdulramon.
