We are looking for a Research Fellow in African Studies to join our research team and assist with teaching for 18 months. The Fellow will work on a research project agreed upon with their mentor.

This position, funded by an endowment, allows staff from sub-Saharan African universities to spend time at the University of Birmingham. Therefore, only applicants based in Africa and affiliated with an African Higher Education Institution are eligible.

Requirements
Essential
– Based in Africa and affiliated with an African Higher Education Institution.
– Must either not hold a permanent academic position or provide a statement from their home institution confirming release for the Fellowship period.
– Doctorate completed between September 1, 2018, and April 1, 2024 (candidates awaiting thesis examination are not eligible).
– Proven research and publication record suitable for post-doctoral experience.
– Ability to create a feasible and compelling research and publication proposal in African Studies.
– Capable of contributing to undergraduate and Masters’ teaching in African Studies.
– Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to ensuring equality and fairness.
Desirable
– Experience in collaborative research, including large projects and meeting deadlines.
– Awareness of current policy issues and connections with civil society organizations.
Selection Process
Role Summary
– Focus on high-quality research and publications in African Studies in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
– Expertise in any sub-Saharan African region or its diaspora, with a preference for those specializing in Ghana.
– Engage with the department’s research environment and the broader university community.
– Analyze and interpret research findings.
– Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Main Duties
– Develop and propose research objectives, with mentor assistance if needed.
– Contribute to writing research funding bids.
– Analyze and interpret data.
– Apply knowledge to develop new intellectual insights.
– Disseminate research findings through publications and seminars.
– Supervise students on research projects and provide PhD student guidance.
– Participate in departmental and school research activities and administration.
– Engage in enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities.
– Collect research data through various methods, such as field research and interviews.
– Present research findings, including drafting academic publications.
– Provide guidance to support staff and students as needed.
– Address issues that may affect research objectives and deadlines.
– Conduct up to six hours of teaching or assessment work per week, which may include designing and delivering a module.
– Promote equality and diversity and foster an inclusive working culture.
– Contribute to developing new models, techniques, and methods.
