Funded generously by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize is awarded annually to two laureates, each receiving an award of US $50,000 to further their efforts in the field of girls’ and women’s education. UNESCO’s Director-General inaugurated the Prize in 2016.
Nomination Procedure
Governments of UNESCO Member States, through their Permanent Delegations to UNESCO, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) officially partnered with UNESCO, may nominate up to three candidates. Self-nominations are not accepted.
Who Can Be Nominated?
Individuals, institutions, or organizations actively promoting girls’ and women’s education are eligible for nomination. Nominations must center on an established project or program that has been operational for at least two years and meets the specified selection criteria.
How to Submit a Nomination?
Self-nominations are not permitted. If you, your institution, or organization fulfill the selection criteria, please liaise with your country’s National Commission to UNESCO or a relevant NGO in official partnership with UNESCO.
Submission Process
Nominations can be submitted via the dedicated online platform in English or French by either a National Commission or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO of the relevant Member State, or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO.
The Permanent Delegation must endorse nominations from a Member State’s National Commission, while the organization’s headquarters must validate nominations from NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO. Nominations from regional branches or affiliated offices will not be accepted.
National Commissions, Permanent Delegations, and NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO can access the online submissions platform through their official UNESCO accounts. The link for access is http://unesco.org/gwe.
NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO will be granted direct access to the online platform upon request to the Secretariat. For access, please contact GWEPrize@unesco.org.
Member States and NGOs in official partnerships may request candidates to complete the online nomination form directly. Access to the platform will be provided to candidates by the Prize Secretariat upon request from the nominating entity.
Requests should be directed to GWEPrize@unesco.org by May 22, 2024. Once the online form is completed, the nominating entity will be responsible for reviewing and validating the submission.
All nominations must be submitted via the online platform by midnight on May 24, 2024 (UTC+1, Paris time). Please note that a nominating entity (Member State or NGO in official partnership with UNESCO) may not submit more than three nominations.
