Following a successful initial investment round, Media Development Investment Fund Ventures is now supporting a new group of media initiatives based in or catering to regions where free and independent news and information are endangered. They have previously invested around $1 million in 9 early-stage firms across 7 countries, including Nigeria, Pakistan, and Colombia.

Key Highlights

Media Development Investment Fund Invests in regions where free and independent news and information face threats, with a global scope for projects benefiting these areas.
Backs projects focused on enhancing accountability, promoting meaningful discourse, or reducing information deficits.
Targets firms along the early-stage spectrum, from pre-seed to growth/Series A rounds.
May consider additional investments in existing recipients.
Building on the achievements of initiatives like Digital News Ventures, which funded early-stage media projects from 2012 to 2015, as well as programs like the South Africa Media Innovation Program (SAMIP) and Amplify Asia.

Eligibility Criteria

Demonstrated commitment to delivering unique, trustworthy, and independent news, addressing information disparities, upholding accountability, or bolstering public interest debate.
Commitment to supporting democratic principles, political diversity, transparency, human rights, and equality for all, irrespective of factors like race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and other bases of discrimination.
Ownership should be free from government or other political and economic influences (with exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis).
Operations located in or serving audiences in regions where free and independent access to news and information is at risk. MDIF Ventures is unable to consider applications from Russia.
